I, Dragon by Ryu Darragh.

I am a Celestial Dragon and my kind is rather rare these days. Once we roamed the stars in number, saw many wondrous sights, did mighty deeds and caused mortals to make many legends and fables where we roamed.

Now, there are only a few of us. Most have either transcended reality altogether or gone to explore other realities. A number have perished by their own will or allowed others to extinguish them. Fewer still have stayed to watch over their children.

Oh, yes. We also have "children" not of the same form we bear. A few of us have seeded worlds across this universe with mortal creatures resembling our ancestral forms.

A rare few were created by one of my kind so that they might have worshippers. Sadly, some of my kind had fallen into the trap of thinking they were gods.

Most, however, were created so that the cry "Here be Dragons!" might be heard in the universe once again.

Life as a Celestial is not a hard life. We live on energy and starlight suffices if we are not exerting ourselves. If we need power to do more we can get it from the stars or by converting any matter we run across into energy.

We are made of energy and can shape ourselves into any form we please. And you would not know us from any other creature around you if we did not wish you to. We can be anything from a rock to a bird, a tree to a hedgehog. Even your next door neighbor. Even your next door neighbors dog :)

When we meet, to socialize, seek a mate or to swap tales of what we have seen, we rejoice. We are so few now that any meeting with our own kind is a joy to the ones still living in this reality.

Of course we love. It is in our natures as surely as it is in all dragons. My mate is a little younger than I am, but that means little to us. We have societies and foibles and fads like many a mortal society. They are just a bit more,.. ethereal :)

My remote ancestors were corporeal, as you most likely are, and lived on a world much like this one. Their descendants became the Elder Dragons and it was a time of crisis. Their world was thought to be doomed.

Some decided to stay and try and save their world. Some decided to make the leap and become creatures of pure energy. The ones that had remained succeeded in saving their world, but we had found a new way of living by then and desired not to go back.

Sometimes I have encountered star faring races and played mischievous games with them. Oh, never cruel or harmful ones. I always left them richer in knowledge or helped them find a new world to settle. And I reaped the reward of having made a few beings laugh and smile. Even a few new friends.

That is one of the reasons I have returned to this world. I saw the activity here and grew curious. This is the world my ancestors came from and the Elder Dragons still survive! And now some of their children are coming home.

Soon, the Draconians will tell their tales and I, a dragon older than many, will be here to hear them told. And, perhaps, I will tell a few of my own.
