Much has been written concerning dragons the world over: the majestic and mystical spirit dragons of the East, the World-Circling Dragons of Nordic Myth and the "classic" fire-breathing, gold-hording dragons of the Traditional West. What we must not forget is that many of these dragons begin their lives as humble dragon eggs.

Dragon Eggs in Mythology

Not so much is written about the eggs themselves however, leaving scope for many possible interpretations in classic mythology and contemporary storytelling alike. They are often found in caves and sometimes on a high crag in a traditional woven nest like that of a bird or propped among the piles of gold and jewels that adorn a dragon's lair. Often a mother dragon will guard her eggs jealously and yet other times the eggs may be left to hatch alone.

Whichever variation of the common themes is presented the dragon's egg remains a mysterious, mystical and sometimes even magical object, as these fun external links show:

Dragon Eggs in Cathedral

Shadow Dragon Egg (Adult)

In the world of dragons created by Daryth Kennedy the dragon egg becomes an enigmatic symbol of many things: a beautiful work of art both symbolising and visualising the grandeur of the dragons as a whole, a vendor and product container, an avatar control switch and when displayed in certain locations around the Isles, an ornate window into the future.

As an Interactive Vendor

Many different dragons eggs are laid out in a semi-circle in the Great Hall of the Cathedral on the Isle of Wyrms. Each one is an ornate and splendid display showcasing the beauty of the dragons: but each one is also a functional information portal and dragon egg vendor. Touching an egg will cause it to display a popup dialog where prices can be seen and dragon descriptions can be read. A dragon egg can be vended here too, with a few simple clicks. See Purchasing a Dragon Avatar for more information.

As well as the egg vendors for the avatars there are also vendors for the dragon pets known as Familiars. These vendors can be found off to the side of the passageway leading into the Great Hall. See Purchasing a Dragon Familiar for more information.

As an Avatar Container

Shadow Dragon Egg (Young)

When a dragon of any size is purchased from an egg vendor it arrives boxed not in some generic packaging, but in a creative and highly decorative egg. Each type of dragon possesses its own individually styled egg which is instantly recognisable as one of Daryth's creations and yet unique on its own standing.

The egg is dragged from inventory and rezzed and takes on the name of its owner. It can be touched for a copy of its contents - the dragon avatar itself - and then either taken back into inventory or left on display as a reminder of the birthright of the dragons.

As an Avatar Control Switch

Dragon Egg (HUD)

When the dragon avatar HUD is worn, in some versions the HUD icon is represented as a dragon egg. Clicking the egg brings up the HUD menu system allowing the wearer to customize their dragon avatar by changing colours, textures and also allowing interactivity with the environment through sounds and gestures. See the Dragon HUD page for more information.

As a Work of Art

The Cathedral on the Isle of Wyrms is a magnificent structure that towers over much of its eponymous sim, guarding treasures contained within.

Many dragons also choose to leave their hatched egg on display in their place of residence to remind them of the ornamental properties of these imaginative creations.

As mentioned earlier on this page, each dragon egg has its own unique style, colour and texture lending further weight to the variety and depth of their artistry. In addition, the adult dragon egg differs in style from the younger dragon's egg while still echoing the cues of its parent egg, as seen in the comparison below:
